The Phans were surely going crazy at the release of Hampton Comes Alive which captures two complete performances from November 20th and 21st, 1998 and a batch of otherwise unavailable material (at the time). Not what I would call Phish in peak form but there is still so much good material here (5 hours!) that even with a massive edit this is still worth hearing. Would still work as a kind of alternate Greatest Hits.

Biggest surprise: Page's version of "Bold as Love" and Mike's "Nellie Kane".

Gettin' Jiggy Wit It

Phish doing "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" is the worst thing that ever happened.

6 CDs of live Phish music might seem like too much Phish, and you wouldn't be wrong. But at the same time, think of the 100s of 6 CD sets of the Grateful Dead that are out there, and these guys are sort of channeling them, so I'm not surprised this exists. Still this album brings back a bit of good memories and nostalgia as I used to enjoy Phish a bit during my Sophomore year in college after hearing their song Llama in Rock Band, and this was on my Ipod, so I'd listen to many of the songs on this set a bit while I ate lunch at the dining hall or while leaving my classes. Sure sometimes a bit too much of Trey's vocals does get annoying, but for the most part he shuts up and jams. I mean this isn't Grateful Dead good, but some songs on this are killer. I'd say get this and the 95 Madison Square Garden performance and that's all the Phish you will ever need.

They're good musicians and his flat voice works best on "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It". The rest just sounds like Phish. I'm not here to judge, if that's what you're looking for. Myself, I want to hear Ween cover every song ever.

I've never been much of a fan of jam bands but I never really had anything against them, but during my senior year in high school a friend burned me a copy of this six disc set and I liked it quite a bit. Then during my freshman year in college my roommate was a ridiculously fanatical Phish fan, so much so that in addition to everything officially released he had a 100 disc CD case filled with nothing by Phish bootlegs. Phish (and the Dead, String Cheese Incident and other bands with a similar aesthetic) were pretty much all he listened to. Naturally that got old fast, he was a cool guy and always had great weed but there's only so much jamming you can listen to before you want to hear a song that doesn't go on for 20 minutes without actually doing anything. So eventually it got to the point where I really never wanted to hear anything by a jam band again. I was all set to actually remove this set from my collection, a major step since I have trouble getting rid of music, but I decided to give this one more listen and...it was still good. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away because even after all the saturation of jam bands I still, legitimately, enjoyed every second of this.

In November 1998 Phish played 2 live shows at the Hampton Colosseum in Hampton, VA. These 2 shows are exactly what you find on this 6 CD set. There had already been a lot of Phish live albums when this was released and there have been many more since the Live Phish series came around. But this was remains something special. The band is in top form, the audience is having a good time and it contains a couple of pleasant surprises. Great covers of Dylan's "Quinn the eskimo" and the Beatles' "Cry baby cry" and even odd covers such as Will Smith's "Gettin' jiggy with it", the Beastie boys' "Sabotage" and Chumbawamba's "Tubthumbing" (what a way to end a show). It's all filled with the band's great humour and their amazing skills as musicians. It's something every fan of the band should own, also one of the ultimate all time live albums. Much better than that album with "Fr" instead of "H".

Why did Phish think this two-night stand, packed with oddball covers, unexpected oldies and a heapin' tablespoon of sheer sloppiness, worthy of immortalising in this hefty six CD package? Oh well. My fave is the tight yet giddy version of "Possum"; MVP award definitely goes to Mr Michael Gordon. There's plenty of better Live Phish in the sea, though.
